Artist

Malaika Ross is an artist who began her fine arts education in a pre-college program at the Rhode Island School of Design. She continued her studies at the Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing in France, Hampshire College in Amherst, MA and the San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, CA. At these academic institutions she received formal instruction in the areas of ceramic art, including traditional Japanese Raku firing techniques, figure drawing, impressionist painting, black & white photography and photomontage. She is the recipient of numerous merit awards and participated in both group and solo exhibitions in Northampton, MA and Providence, RI. Her art making process is somewhat analytical and employs the use of deliberately imposed traditional art making frameworks for each work. Through inquiry she methodically addresses the personal and visual discord in her work. Her most recent work is primarily autobiographical in nature. Her process is to recall memories and Caribbean folklore heard during her childhood growing up on the small Caribbean island of St. Croix. She translates these memories and stories into images utilizing photomontage.
